Evacuation Day Lessons

During our World War 2 project, we had an evacuation day. An evacuation is when a child, woman or baby is sent to the country on a bus or a train because the city is too dangerous.

The first half of the day we went to get billited (given to a family) and the second half we were acting like children at school in 1939. The tables in class were all in straight lines and we moved up the class depending on how we answered questions. Mr Devereux was really strict with us and sometimes a bit scary! Our first lesson was maths. We were taught about the different types of money. We got a work sheet with money questions. The coins they had back then were:

  • Half a crown
  • Farthing
  • Sixpence
  • Ha’penny
  • Shilling

The next lesson was writing . We had to write letter home to our parents (pretending to).We had too write really fancy. The class had to write that they had arrived safely.

We then did reading. Each of us had to stand up and read a passage from a book called ‘The Secret Garden’ to the rest of the class.

When we did handwriting we had to write really fancy. The class had to write a couple of old fashion rhymes.

Hello Izzy
I understand you woulden't like school so much, if it was like in the old days?

Hello Stadil-Vedersø Skole,

I liked some parts, others not so much but I would still like to live in the 21st century the most!
